Sunset with Camels

Presenter

Oliver is a presenter for the Discovery Channel and Travel Channel. The eight-part series “Living with the Mek” and seven part series ‘Living with the Kombai’ (known as ‘World’s Lost Tribes’ in the UK) aired in 2008 and 2007 to critical acclaim (see ‘Press’ section for reviews). The series have been nominated for an Emmy. Oliver is also the presenter for Presidential Tours on the Travel Channel that combines both his journalism and presenting.

As a presenter, Oliver brings his trademark misfortune and guarantee that if he’s involved, everything will most probably go wrong. Whilst inspired by Indiana Jones, his expeditions to date are more reminiscent of Aled Jones’ journeys – the chorister famous for his rendition of the animated film, The Snowman. But it is the American anthropologist, Roy Chapman Andrews, who many believe is the real-life inspiration for Indiana Jones, that can probably best explain his quest for adventure: ‘adventures are a mark of incompetence … (where) success depends on the humdrum, knowing everything about the area, drawing on the experience of others, using the best equipment, planning meticulously, staying healthy’ Oliver’s incompetent adventures have caused problems in over 70 countries and include a 1250km unexpected walk across the Gobi Desert, being hunted down by bandits on the Chinese-Tibetan borders, being arrested for diving uncharted wrecks of the Sea Silk Routes, being chased across the Shangtu Grasslands by The People’s Liberation Army, breaking his arm whilst trying to show off to some girls he was riding across Mongolia with, being imprisoned on charges of espionage, mistakenly running 6 consecutive marathons across the Sahara, having horses kidnapped by rustlers, studying kung-fu with confused Shaolin Monks, retrieving video tapes from a kidnapped family in Nicaragua, leading a Royal Geographical Society Expedition to research the Grass Silk Road and most recently, humiliating himself in front of indigenous people of New Guinea.

In the hope of sharing his expedition knowledge and regaining some professional credibility Oliver founded the non-profit organisation iNOMAD that works to communicate discovery through education and the media.
